The kitchen is one of the busiest rooms in the home, so you want to be positive that your kitchen’s design is welcoming and tasteful. Choosing the décor and fixtures for the kitchen in a log home is different from doing the same in an ordinary home, so we’ve provided a few tips to help you make the most of your log house’s kitchen.
- Embrace your exposed beams: One of the many features that set a log home apart from ordinary houses is the exposed beams that run throughout the house. These can be often neglected, but they can become an important design feature if they’re emphasized. Consider hanging pots, pans, and utensils from your beams if they’re low over your head, while vertical beams can serve as end pieces for your island or bar area.
- Choose a natural floor: The linoleum that looks right at home in a modern kitchen seems out of place in a log home. Ask your log home builder about wood flooring options to match your logs’ natural color. Alternatively, since kitchens don’t always lend themselves well to wood floors, try a stone or slate floor. Although it seems like an unlikely choice, even brick can make a good flooring choice—it adds a charmingly rustic touch.
- Add an accent wall: Bring some interest to your kitchen by adding a wall of a different texture from your logs. Beaded board adds an effect that’s reminiscent of the traditional cottage, while slate walls bring an outdoorsy touch.
- Choose your cabinets carefully: If your logs make up your kitchen’s walls, you definitely want to make sure your cabinets don’t clash! Your log home builder can tell you what type of wood to choose for your cabinets, or even recommend a particular stain. Alternatively, white cabinets are always classic, and sage green, dark blue, or maroon cabinets could add a touch of subdued color.
