It seems like over a decade ago, the only wood stain colors were simply variations of brown. However, modern manufacturers now offer a variety of colors—blue, green, orange, and many other options. Not only have the colors of wood stains improved, but also technology has enhanced the substance of the stains, making them less toxic and longer lasting. When it comes to choosing what stain to use for your log cabin, keep these guidelines in mind:

• Stain Formula: The three basic stain selections for your log home are oil-based, water-based, and emulsions. When it comes to oil-based stains, most manufacturers won’t recommend them unless you’re restaining a log cabin and don’t know the original formula of the stain. Water-based stains tend to be more eco-friendly, and emulsions are hybrids of both oil-based and water-based.
• Interior vs. Exterior: Interior and exterior stains are pretty similar, except stains used for the exterior have special additives. Exterior surfaces are exposed to harsher conditions than the interior of the log cabin, so stains designed for the exterior have ingredients that protect the surface from UV rays and prevent the growth of mold or mildew. However, stains with all the extra additives tend to be more toxic and expensive.
• Color Choices: Choose a color that you will enjoy for years. Don’t be afraid to be different, but keep in mind that changing colors on a stained log wall is harder than merely repainting a wall. Also, be inspired by the environment that your log cabin is located in. On the east coast, grey exteriors are popular because it complements the rocky shorelines. Log cabins on the west coasts are typically warmer tones, reflecting the desert and sunshine surrounding them.
