When decorating your new custom deck, keep in mind warm, vibrant colors are no longer just the realm of indoor decorators, but they’re also migrating outside for the warm summer months! Traditionally reserved for muted, subdued colors, decks are showing their true colors this summer—and they’re much brighter and fresher than we’ve seen in a long time.

And after all, why shouldn’t we perk up this outdoor space with a splash of color? Just be sure that the color you choose works with the color of your home and if it’s not being used as an extension of your living space, then it should be! This space is valuable real estate, usable square footage and an asset to your home.

Your Wisconsin or Illinois deck is a living room, dining room, play room, work room, kitchen, all rolled into one. The key is to make it functional and most importantly inviting. Make it a space that beckons you, draws you to it. As the deck builder of choice for many Illinois & Wisconsin residents, we build decks in a wide range of styles and sizes to ensure your deck is as unique as you.

Before we consider a few of the rock star colors of this summer, it helps to understand some basic information. Deck stains come in four opacities. Which one you choose depends on the condition of your deck as well as your personal preference.

Clear or Natural is a very light stain, which adds next to no color to the wood. If you have a new deck and/or you want to show off the wood and its grain, use this stain. The application will last only from 1-2 years.

Tinted stain adds just a hint of color, but still lets the natural grain show through. If you want to add some color, but don’t want it to be in-your-face bright, choose this option. The application will last from 2-3 years.

Semitransparent stain still allows the wood grain to show through, but it offers a thicker punch of color. If your deck is starting to show its age, then opt for this choice. The application will last from 3-5 years.

Solid stain completely covers the wood grain with a solid burst of color. If your deck has stains and is sporting some repair work, then choose this color to cover the imperfections. This application will last for 5 years, possibly longer.

Once you have chosen your opacity, it’s time to look for a color. Choosing a stain that complements the color of your house is a good place to start. Let’s look at a few colors. If you’re having a new deck built this summer, be sure to discuss your color preferences with your deck builder in Wisconsin and Illinois.

Let’s not forget that these stains work for more than decks. Try staining your wooden lawn furniture in a color to accent your deck. For example, Cabot makes a Colonial Yellow stain that you may want to try on your wooden lawn furniture–with a blue deck as its backdrop.

Another option to consider when you want to add a splash of color to your Wisconsin deck is by adding cushions to deck furniture. Use colors and patterns that compliment the style of your home. If you live in a modern home try bold colors. For a country home floral patterns are beautiful. A traditional brick house will look lovely with classic colors like white, black and beige. Make it a place that you want to spend time in.

As you celebrate the remainder of summer, why not bring some of these vibrant shades to your outdoor living spaces too? If you need help with your deck repairs or building a new deck, ask around for a few recommendations of the deck builders in your area. It won’t be long before your deck is the favorite gathering spot for your family and friends.
